There are a range of organizations to assist biomedical entrepreneurs with launching, expanding and relocating to The Medical Capital.

Akron Global Business Accelerator

The Akron Global Business Accelerator, located in downtown Akron in the former B.F. Goodrich plant, comprises more than 250,000 sq. ft. of office, lab and light manufacturing space. It is an entrepreneurial community focused on technology-based start-ups and early-stage companies in fields such as biomedical, energy, advanced materials, IT, instruments, controls and electronics. Business counseling and advice, strategic planning and networking are offered through the Accelerator’s Technology Company Acceleration program.

Akron is for Entrepreneurs

Akron has long been known for its historic connection to invention and innovation and it continues that tradition with the formation of Akron is for Entrepreneurs, an online resource guide to give those that desire support for their business an easier way to locate and aggregate the connections they may need to be successful.


A business formation, recruitment, and acceleration initiative, BioEnterprise guides the growth of biotechnology, medical device, and health IT and services companies.

BioEnterprise provides companies:

  • Experienced bioscience management guidance;
  • Privileged relationships with world-class research and clinical institutions;
  • Access to venture capital and private equity firms as well as knowledge of debt and non-dilutive funding opportunities;
  • Business development and alliance support for strategic partnerships; and
  • A network of regional business capabilities including technical services, equipment, professional service providers, and flexible incubator space.


The Council of Smaller Enterprises protects and advocates for the small businesses in the Northeast Ohio region. As the region’s small business expert organization, COSE offers its members networking and educational events, advocacy on legislative and regulatory issues and cost-effective group purchasing programs. The programs and services are designed to grow the small business community successfully.


Flashstarts is a Cleveland-based business start-up accelerator and venture fund focused on unique and innovative uses of software and technology. Flashstarts’ rigorous 12-week summer accelerator program is powered by rapid cycles of feedback and iteration, customized guidance from dedicated coaches, an extensive network of top-tier, experienced mentors, and an award-winning internship program.

Flashstarts provides each company with an initial investment of $25,000 and offers a chance of up to $500,000 in follow-on funding. It also provides access to 35,000 square feet of start-up office space known as StartMart.


The Great Lakes Innovation and Development Enterprise (GLIDE) helps Northeast Ohio entrepreneurs wrap sound business practices around business ideas. GLIDE’s experienced Entrepreneurs-in-Residence provide professional business assistance to companies at every stage of development and connect entrepreneurs with the tools and resources they need to succeed.

Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center

The Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center (GCIC) houses start-up companies developing innovative solutions for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Strategically located near the main campuses of Cleveland Clinic, Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals, the incubator offers 50,000 sq. ft. of state-of-the-art space. Clients enjoy customizable laboratory facilities for new product research and development activities, flexible office space and conference rooms. The facility provides clients with convenient access to world-leading clinicians and investigators along with all of GCIC’s business support services.

Greater Cleveland Partnership

The Greater Cleveland Partnership supports collaborative efforts to boost the economic vitality of the Northeast Ohio region. As the premier economic development organization and leading business advocacy organization in the community, the Greater Cleveland Partnership is actively involved in conversations and support legislation that generate attractive and sustainable business conditions. The mission is to mobilize private-sector leadership, expertise and resources to create attractive business conditions that create jobs, grow investment and improve the economic prosperity of the region.


JumpStart provides intensive, high-impact assistance to diverse entrepreneurs and small businesses owners, working one-on-one to establish and achieve value-creating milestones of growth. It deploys pre-seed and seed capital investments to help entrepreneurs turn their innovative ideas into high-growth companies. JumpStart will also connect entrepreneurs to numerous other pre-seed, seed and early-stage sources of capital across Northeast Ohio.

Launch League

Launch League helps grow startups in Akron, including SaaS startups, mobile apps, web apps, enterprise software apps, consumer hardware, and more. Launch League helps in three major ways: connecting founders with the talent, cofounders, mentors, and investors they need to make their startups successful; providing introductions to funding sources, such as angel investors and VCs; and raising awareness of the entrepreneurial community through marketing campaigns and PR.


LaunchHouse is a lean business accelerator that fosters entrepreneurial success and job creation through investing cash, hard work and collaboration. The business accelerator offers education, funding, mentorship, and networking opportunities. LaunchHouse’s mission is to create a hub of entrepreneurial innovation for promising startups and to help transform ideas into successful companies.


The Manufacturing Advocacy & Growth Network (MAGNET) supports, educates and champions manufacturing in Northeast Ohio. Its High Tech Business Incubation Program provides a comprehensive package of business assistance services to support the growth of technology-oriented companies. The 85,000-sq. ft. MAGNET Innovation Center offers affordable manufacturing, lab, conference and presentation space with 24-hour access.


The Research, Entrepreneurship, Discovery and Innovation Zone (REDIzone) at Northeast Ohio Medical University is a biomedical business incubator focused on the attraction and growth of biomedical companies within the research areas of Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED): auditory neurosciencecommunity-based mental healthmetabolic and cardiovascular disease, and musculoskeletal biology.

The REDIzone program not only offers physical space for early-stage biomedical companies, but is also a portal to many other resources, including Institutional Review Board certification for clinical trials, a world-class Comparative Medicine Unit, technology transfer assistance, and mentorship from renowned faculty and scientists.

Sears think[box]

Case Western Reserve University’s center for innovation and entrepreneurship, think[box], provides a space for anyone – students, faculty, alumni, and members of the community – to tinker and creatively invent. Located in a 7-story, 50,000 sq. ft. facility, this $35M project is one of the largest university-based innovation centers in the world.

think[box] provides access to fabrication and prototyping equipment, as well as the following services:


TeamNEO is an economic development organization focused on creating jobs for Northeast Ohio’s residents. In collaboration with partners, it leads the region’s business attraction efforts, supports business retention and expansion work as Northeast Ohio’s JobsOhio affiliate, and aligns strategies and resources within the economic development network to maximize its impact. In addition, TeamNEO provides tools to assist employers in attracting talent to the region.
